When family and friends cannot travel, whether they live overseas, are unwell, or are elderly, they should still be able to take part in the final farewell. Funeral.Video provides respectful, discreet live streaming for Sikh funerals, so loved ones anywhere in the world can join in prayer and remembrance.
Understanding the Sikh Funeral (Antam Sanskar)
The Sikh funeral, known as Antam Sanskar ("last rites"), is a dignified ceremony rooted in the belief that death is part of God's will (Hukam) and that the soul continues its journey. The emphasis is on acceptance, prayer, and celebrating a life lived, rather than on grief alone.
Preparation
The body is washed and dressed in clean clothes. If the person was an initiated Sikh, the Five Ks (Kesh, Kangha, Kara, Kirpan, Kachera) remain with them.
Gathering and prayers
Family and community gather, often at the family home or the gurdwara. Hymns (Kirtan) from the Guru Granth Sahib are sung or read, offering comfort and reflection on life, death, and the soul.
Kirtan Sohila and Ardas
Kirtan Sohila, a prayer of the evening, is recited at the funeral. The Ardas, the formal Sikh prayer, is offered for the peace of the departed and for the strength of the family. The congregation traditionally stands with hands joined during Ardas.
Cremation
Sikhs traditionally cremate their dead. Close family and friends attend, and final prayers are said. The ashes are later taken and scattered in flowing water, such as a river or the sea.
Sahej Path or Akhand Path and Bhog
After the funeral, many families hold a reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, concluding with the Bhog ceremony, a time of remembrance and thanksgiving for the life of the departed.
Langar
A shared vegetarian meal is offered to all, reflecting the Sikh values of equality, humility, and service.
