How I Live Stream a Funeral When the Venue is Without Internet
“There’s no internet at the venue. Is live streaming still possible?”
I hear this often, usually from a worried family member or a funeral director who wants to include relatives overseas but isn’t sure it can be done. In most cases, the answer is yes. In a few, it’s a different kind of yes. Here’s how I approach venues with no internet, and what I tell families when they ask.
“No internet” can mean three different things
Before I plan anything, I try to understand what’s actually missing:
1. No Wi-Fi, but good mobile signal. This is the most common situation. Many churches, village halls and crematoria have no public Wi-Fi, but the mobile networks reach them perfectly well.
2. Weak or patchy mobile signal. The service is possible, but needs more planning, such as choosing the best position, testing in advance and building in a safety net.
3. No signal of any kind. Rare, but it does happen in deep valleys, remote burial grounds or very old buildings.
Each calls for a different plan, so the first thing I do is find out which one we’re dealing with.
The venue’s internet isn’t part of my set-up
I don’t depend on a venue’s connection, so a lack of Wi-Fi is rarely a problem for me. I bring my own connection, which means the stream doesn’t rely on the church, chapel or hall. That’s true at family homes, graveside services, wakes and woodland burial grounds as well. What matters is whether there’s usable mobile coverage where we’ll be. That’s what I focus on checking.
When the signal is weak
Where coverage is limited but not absent, there’s plenty that can be done:
Choosing the right spot. A few steps in one direction, near a doorway or window, can make a real difference. Prioritising what matters most. I’d always choose steady sound and a stable picture over the highest possible quality. For viewers at a distance, hearing every word of a tribute matters more than sharpness. Recording as I stream. Even if the live connection dips, a full recording is being made, so the family always has the service.

What families should do
If you’re arranging a funeral and you’ve been told the venue has no internet, please don’t rule out streaming yet. Whatever the venue, my goal is the same: to let family and friends, wherever they are in the world, share in the final goodbye together.
